For the professional handyman there is a wide array of tools on the market for every type of job. It would be easy to just go and buy a cheap one of each type so that you always have what you need. With the difference in the quality and durability of the tools available though, this could prove to be a false economy. Many tools are designed and built with the amateur DIY enthusiast in mind. They might only be used a few times a year. For the professional, however, tools will need to survive heavy-duty use, where cheaper, lower-quality ones are not going to survive for long. Compromising on quality, therefore, might mean having to replace them regularly, leading to higher costs over time.
So, before rushing out and spending your hard-earned cash, it is a good idea to think about what you want to achieve and what the best tool for the job is. Otherwise you might find that you have spent a lot of money on something that is unsuitable, not up to the job, or just falls apart after being used for a while.
The first decision about power tools is whether to go for cordless or plug-in. Cordless, battery operated tools may seem more convenient, allowing you to use them without the need for a nearby electrical outlet or having to run a long cable from a more distant socket. Think about the kind of jobs you will be doing before choosing cordless or plug-in. In fact, the professional handyman will often find that both are necessary.
What are the most useful power tools for professionals? This will depend on the nature of the work that you do, but the following are probably the most useful, basic power tools:
1. A good power drill is a must. Whether it's simply putting up shelves or drilling large holes through brick walls, a reliable and sturdy power drill will save you enormous amounts of time and effort. As this will probably be your most useful and most used tool, it's worth spending a bit of money on a higher quality one that will last.
2. Another valuable tool is the jigsaw. You can use a jigsaw to cut straight lines in wood, metal or other materials, but its primary and most useful purpose is for cutting curved lines. It's important to remember that a saw is only as good as its blade, so don`t skimp on these.
3. An angle grinder has many uses but it is mostly for cutting through metal, wood, tiles or even bricks, all tasks that the professional handyman will be performing time and time again. Whilst extremely useful, it is a tool that can be dangerous if not handled with care. The spinning disc that is the cutting blade rotates at a very high speed and just touching a finger or hand with it can result in serious injury. Always wear gloves and eye protectors when using an angle grinder.
4. For cutting flat materials on a bench, a circular saw is a necessity. It gives quick and accurate results but again must be used carefully. Make sure that the protective guard is always in place before using and wear the appropriate protective gear.
5. The labour saving value of power tools is never more apparent than when it comes to sanding. This is a job that can seem interminable when done by hand but is quick and easy with a powered sander. It`s well worth buying a good quality sander to achieve a perfect finish on wooden floors and other surfaces.
All of these DeWalt power tools will prove useful and provide a good basis for a handyman's toolkit. Remember that there is more to consider when buying tools than just the price. Invest in quality and save yourself money in the long run. |
